GEORGE SQUARE THEATRE TO OPEN AS CENTRE FOR MUSICAL THEATREDURING EDINBURGH FESTIVAL FRINGE 2008
INTRODUCTION
INTRO
For the first time in the Fringe’s history, Edinburgh has a dedicated home for Musical Theatre as George Square Theatre plans for the best of new and classic Musical Theatre across three performance spaces. The Festivals Office at the University of Edinburgh will be operating the venue in partnership with Chris Grady.org and supported by Anthony Alderson and his highly renowned team at Pleasance Theatre. Chris Grady will be heading up the programming team.
Just as the Aurora venue in Edinburgh has built an awareness of new dance and physical theatre, so we hope over a few years, that George Square Theatres will become a focus for new work, and a launchpad for new talent.
If we help to further the commercial exploitation of a new work, or interest in a classic piece of Musical Theatre, or bring a great singer or actor to the attention of producers, then that’s great. We also want to have a fantastic excuse for a Musical Theatre party – where better to create a Festival of Musicals than in the Festival Capital City of the world.
